This recipe provides a step-by-step guide to making delicious homemade naan.
Ingredients
- Dry Ingredients:
- Strong white bread flour: 350g
- Sea salt: 1 tsp
- Caster sugar: 1 tbsp
- Fast-action dried yeast: 7g sachet
- Wet Ingredients:
- Natural yoghurt: 100g
- Olive oil: 2 tbsp (plus extra for greasing)
- Warm water: 100ml
- Optional Flavor Enhancers:
- Garlic: 1 clove, minced
- Melted butter or ghee: for brushing
- Fresh coriander: chopped, to garnish
- Nigella or black sesame seeds: 1 tbsp
Instructions
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: Stir in the yoghurt, olive oil, and warm water. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise (Proofing): Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean tea towel, and let it rise in a warm place for approximately 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare Garlic Butter (Optional): If using garlic, mince it and mix it into the melted butter or ghee. Set aside.
- Shape Naan: Divide the risen dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten and shape into ovals or teardrops, roughly ½ cm thick.
- Cook Naan: Heat a dry non-stick frying pan or griddle over high heat. Cook each naan for 1–2 minutes per side, until puffed up, golden brown, and slightly charred.
- Brush and Garnish: Immediately brush the cooked naan with melted butter, garlic butter (if using), chopped coriander, and seeds (optional).
Tips & Tricks
