Homemade Pita Bread

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour or half whole wheat + half all-purpose
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp instant yeast or 1 ½ tsp active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water around 40–43°C
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Method
 

Make the Dough
  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy (skip this step if using instant yeast).
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil.
  3. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
Shape the Pita
  1. Punch down the dough and divide into 6–8 equal balls.
  2. Roll each ball into a ¼ inch thick circle. Keep covered with a cloth.
Cook the Pita:
    Oven Method:
    1. Preheat oven to 230°C (450°F) with a tray or pizza stone inside. Bake rolled dough for 3–5 minutes until puffed.
    Stovetop Method:
    1. Heat a skillet/tava on medium-high. Cook each pita for 1–2 minutes per side until puffed and golden.
